Mountaintop Church Statement of Faith

We affirm the original creeds of the Church, The Apostle’s Creed and The Nicene Creed. We believe these things to be true about the central tenants of the Christian faith.

God

We believe in the one God revealed in Scripture. We believe this one God is the creator of the universe and established His covenant with Abraham to reveal Himself to the world through the Hebrew people. God made Himself known to Moses, spoke through the prophets, and invites us into a relationship with Him. We believe God exists in three distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe He is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. He is a Holy God, motivated by love, and is the one true God for all mankind.

Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus Christ is God in the flesh to reveal the Father to humanity as Savior of the world. We affirm the historic creeds, that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, taught with great power, performed many miracles, was crucified, dead, and buried. We believe on the third day He physically rose from the dead. We trust the death of Jesus Christ on the cross provides forgiveness of sins to all who believe. We believe His resurrection established Jesus as Lord over all creation and proclaimed His victory over sin and death. We believe that participation in this resurrection is a future gift to all who have confessed faith in Christ. Salvation and eternal life are found in Christ alone. Jesus calls us into repentance to confess our sin and believe in His death and resurrection. We believe the Father gave Jesus to the world to be God with us.

Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is the real presence of God, the third person of the Trinity, in our world and the heart of every believer. We seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in every decision. The Holy Spirit is the gift Jesus promised as He ascended into heaven. The Holy Spirit birthed the Church and continues to move in the world drawing people to the Father. We believe the Holy Spirit changes us. God didn’t want us to be alone, so He gave us the Holy Spirit to be God with us.

The Church

We believe in the Church. The local church is the hope of the world and is God’s plan to share the message of Jesus with every generation. The Church is the body of Christ for the sake of the world and God’s primary vehicle to share the Good News about Jesus. We see ourselves as part of the Global Christian Church with all those who have trusted in Jesus by faith and have been baptized into that faith. We exist to live for Christ, not ourselves. With our brothers and sisters around the world, we seek to glorify God by loving him, making him known to the world by sharing the Good News about Jesus, and exemplifying Jesus’ command to love others as He loved us. We want to be a church known not by what we’re against but by what we’re for.

The Bible

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and that the Scripture writers were led by the Holy Spirit. We believe the Bible tells a story through the Old and New Testaments of God’s love for the world and hope for humanity. Everything necessary for salvation can be found in Scripture, and we believe it can be trusted. As a church, we lean on the Bible as our foundation for how we see ourselves and the world, and it serves as a “light unto our path” in decision making. The Bible is trustworthy, so we teach and encourage obedience to the Word because it has the power to transform our lives and represents God’s Word to us.

Humanity

We believe all humans are created in the image of God. We believe God has a plan for our lives that is far better than any of us could imagine. God wants to have a relationship with every human on earth and has a purpose for us. We believe we’ve all done things that have broken the relationship God intended to have and messed up the purpose for which we were created. People call this sin or disobedience. Whatever one calls it, here’s the bottom line: things haven’t gone perfectly. Because we’re not perfect. We believe in second chances and that we are loved no matter our past and that God wants all people to be saved. And we believe there’s hope. Our heart and prayer are that all humans encounter Jesus, repent of their sins, discover His hope through choosing to follow Him, and find purpose in serving Him as He restores the image in which they were originally created.

Ministry, Morality & Marriage

For centuries, Christians have found it important to agree on core doctrinal beliefs as those above, faithful followers of Jesus disagree on other issues. Below are Mountaintop’s understanding and biblical interpretation of some of the key issues in which there is incongruity in the greater Church. These guide how we teach, disciple our people, and lead people toward faithful obedience. While our congregation might have differing ideas about some of these issues, we anticipate staff, elders, and board members to be united in how we lead our people in these areas.

• We affirm the leadership and teaching gifts of women in ministry. Women lead, teach, preach, and serve in almost every area of our church. We believe women are called into ministry, and we have female pastors as part of our staff. Women do not serve as elders, as we interpret Paul’s description in 1 Timothy about elders to specify men; however, women do serve on our board and the highest levels of our pastoral team.
• We do not teach abstinence in the consumption of alcohol; rather, we understand moderation to be in line with biblical teaching. We have staff members who drink alcohol and those that don’t. We lament drunkenness and count it as a sin of which to repent and avoid.
• We condemn the production and use of pornographic material as an affront to the image bearing nature of all humans and as a degradation of the sexual union that God offers men and women within the covenant of marriage.
• We believe divorce is against the will of God except in situations of abuse or infidelity. We also believe in the power of repentance, the new creation action of the Holy Spirit, and in the God who can redeem all things for His glory. Therefore, we have divorced staff members, elders, and board members who have leaned into their new creation identity.
• We accept baptisms from all Christian denominations. We celebrate the work of God in his Holy Apostolic Church through the many forms of baptism. Generally, we practice immersion baptism except in the case of medical or personal reasons. We do rebaptize people after counsel about why this baptism is important for this new season of their spiritual journey.
• We hold that God’s design for marriage is between one man and one woman, and we believe that is the boundary for which God created sexual intimacy. Simply, we affirm faithfulness in marriage between a man and woman, and celibacy in singleness. Therefore, anything that falls outside the lines of that boundary to be outside God’s intention for us. This includes premarital sex, extramarital affairs, cohabitation, polyamorous relationships, bigamy, and same-sex relationships. We do believe same-sex attracted individuals can lead obedient Christian lives by practicing celibacy in singleness.
• We teach generosity as a value in our church, and we believe a tithe (10%) of our income is a starting point for the Bible’s teaching on generosity. It is expected that those in staff, elder, and board leadership will be faithful stewards of their resources by tithing. Offerings, given above and beyond the tithe, are encouraged by those who have been prompted by the Holy Spirit to do so or by those whose Spiritual Gift is generosity.
